Mtoni Marine is situated several kilometres outside Stone Town at Bububu, near the ruins of Mtoni Palace, the first palace of Sultan Seyyid Said.
The hotel has one of the finest restaurants on the island where guests can dine in true fusion style. The food is served at tables on the beach, so you can feast on delicious cuisine while sitting barefoot under the stars. Even if you don't decide to stay at the hotel, try to make a point of visiting this romantic restaurant.
A great new addition to the existing restaurants is the Sushi bar, serving fresh sushi daily.
Besides the Sushi bar, they have opened a tropical therapy centre, where they administer tropical aroma therapy. The friendly staff at Mtoni Marine are willing to offer advice about a variety of excursions. You can also go cruising around the islands on the hotel's new dhow, the ‘Spice Coast Dhow’. This comes at a fee though.
The Bububu area is of historical interest as you'll find the ruins of two Sultan palaces as well as some interesting Persian baths. The hotel offers a relaxed, laid-back place to escape the hustle and bustle of Stone Town. We only recommend you spend a night or two here if you plan to really experience Stone Town, which is a 6km taxi drive away.
Mtoni Marine is ideal as either a stop over if you don’t want to stay in Stone Town, or for 2-3 nights if you want to experience the culture of Stone Town, do not want the noise associated with the town, and would like good-looking views of the ocean and Chapwani Island. We would recommend you combine your stay at Mtoni Marine with a couple of nights elsewhere on the island.
The
rooms are located in lush tropical gardens and are all
air-conditioned. They are divided into categories:
Palm Court
, Club Rooms and Bara Bara Rooms.
The
Palm
Court
Rooms
are Mtoni Marine’s most luxurious rooms. They're
situated in a double-storey block and have views of
the sea - you can even see as far as
Zanzibar
's satellite islands of Chapwani, Changuu, Snake and
Bawe. The rooms have tiled floors and private
balconies or verandas. The four upstairs rooms have
baths with a view, while the downstairs bathrooms have
showers only. They are well situated and highly
recommended if you are staying at the hotel.
Their new Bara Bara Rooms
have been designed in a true East meets West
architectural style and overlook fragrant Frangipane
trees. Six downstairs rooms and six upstairs rooms are
available, all fully equipped with air conditioning,
fans and en-suite bathrooms. The upstairs rooms have
balconies designed for romantic sunset viewing, while
the downstairs ones have a small ‘chill-out’
baraza. All the rooms are decorated with locally
produced furniture and convey an authentic island
feel.
The Club Rooms are set in a block, and have verandas overlooking the
garden. While less private than the
Palm Court
, they are ideal for families or groups of friends.

The Mtoni Marine Restaurant,
run by Waldemar and Sjani, is well-known for its
excellent fusion cuisine using tantalising local
spices. The fare includes generous seafood
lunches, beach barbeques (Tuesdays and
Saturdays) and an a la carte menu. This open-air
thatched restaurant is situated right on the
beach, which makes it perfect for romantic
dinners. You can enjoy your meal on the terrace,
in the spice garden or at a table on the beach
(you're allowed to kick off your shoes and feel
the sand between your toes). There is usually
some form of live entertainment in the evenings:
a Masala night with a local Taarab band (a
mixture of Arabic, Indian and African music) on
Tuesdays and an African jazz group on
Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
There's also the Mcheza Bar, which is situated
near the beach and has a good selection of
cocktails, snacks and reasonably priced meals,
including pizzas and burgers.
